Nagarjun Jamacho Hike

Nagarjun Jamacho Hike is one of the nearest hikes to the capital, Kathmandu. Famous for offering serene trails and astounding scenic displays, the Nagarjun Jamacho Hike explores the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to the north west of the valley. The hike also allows the travelers to take a quick break from the bustling city and enjoy the amenities of nature. Wandering through the national park, you can enjoy the melodies of the birds and animals as you tread to the top of the hill to Jamacho Monastery.

The Nagarjun Jamacho Hike initiates at Phulbari Gate, the entrance to the national park. The name Nagarjun, which also inspired the name of the hike, was derived from the name of Buddhist saint Nagarjun who came meditated in the forest and obtained enlightenment. The forest is thus named after the saint and, till date, the forest and the monastery are held in great respect by the people in the valley. The Nagarjun hill is sacred for both Hindu and Buddhists. While hiking to the top, you pass through the beautiful pine forests, numerous caves, and shrines. On the way, you can see wild animals like boar, monkeys, etc. and varieties of birds. The subtropical floras in this region also include many medicinal herbs.

The Jamacho viewpoint (2128 m), the highest point during this hike provides incredible views of mountain peaks like Ganesh Himal (7,422 m), Dorje Lakpa (6,966 m), and Langtang ranges. You also get to explore some ancient caves and visit Jamacho monastery where you can get some spiritual insight. After the hike, you retrace the trail to Phulbari Gate and head back to your hotel.  This is an easy hike so any nature love with moderate physical fitness can do this.
